The 2024 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup turns onto the home straight this weekend with the seventh of eight races this season. A 29-strong line-up of Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars will race at the Circuit Zandvoort as part of the Dutch Grand Prix support programme. Championship leader Larry ten Voorde and his two hottest rivals, Harry King and Marvin Klein, are separated by just twelve points. The race gets underway on Sunday (25 August 2024) at 11:05 CEST.
Preview
Historically, Dutch drivers have made up a large percentage of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup grid. Currently, five drivers from the Netherlands are permanently registered to contest the international one-make cup. At the Circuit Zandvoort, four guest drivers will join the home team. Among them is Flynt Schuring from the Proton Huber Competition team, the youngest contender in the field. The brother of Morris Schuring, last year’s Zandvoort winner, has just celebrated his 18th birthday. “I haven’t set my sights quite as high as Morris,” says Flynt Schuring, keeping his expectations in check ahead of his second Supercup race. “But I certainly want to make an impression in front of the magnificent backdrop of tens of thousands of Dutch fans.”
Larry ten Voorde obviously has high hopes coming into his home race. The two-time Supercup champion wants to defend his championship lead on the 4.259-kilometre circuit at the North Sea coast. “Although I live about an hour and a half’s drive from Zandvoort, I’ve spent more time there than on any other racetrack – this circuit is like my second home,” says ten Voorde, who has claimed the top step of the podium four times so far this Supercup season. “My family and many of my friends will be making the trip to cheer me on this weekend. I hope I can thank them with my first Supercup win in Zandvoort.” Driving for Schumacher CLRT, Larry ten Voorde laid the foundations for this goal in June, when he won two Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland races in one weekend at the same venue.
Harry King is yet to win a race on the Dutch Formula 1 circuit. “Nevertheless, I like the track, it’s very demanding to drive,” stated the Englishman from the BWT Lechner Racing squad. Thanks to his victory in Budapest and third place in Spa-Francorchamps, King has closed the gap to championship leader ten Voorde to seven points. “My title chances are still intact,” King calculated. “But I definitely have to beat Larry to the finish line in Zandvoort.”
Marvin Klein, currently third overall and teammate of Larry ten Voorde, has a completely different Zandvoort tally: two years ago, the Frenchman celebrated his first Supercup victory ever on the Dutch circuit. Four weeks ago, he claimed his second Supercup win, crossing the finish line first in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium. This catapulted him into the trio of title aspirants. “I struggled a bit at the start of the season,” admits Klein. “But things have improved in the last three races. I want to go for victory in Zandvoort as well.”
In the Rookie classification, two Dutch drivers are currently battling it out for the first-place trophy: Kas Haverkort, who drives for Uniserver by Team GP Elite, is slightly ahead of Robert de Haan from the BWT Lechner Racing team. In the team standings, Schumacher CLRT has pulled away from the pursuing pack.
“This is only the fourth time that the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup has held a race at Circuit Zandvoort. But with its electric atmosphere and the many avid fans, the track is undoubtedly one of the highlights on the calendar. This race is followed by our season finale in Monza. The title favourites will no doubt pull out all stops to secure an optimal position. I think the spectators are in for another thrilling race,” comments Oliver Schwab, Project Manager Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.
Flagship project in the Supercup: eFuels with partner HIF Global
2024 marks the first year of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup running exclusively on predominantly fully synthetic eFuels for the first time. The raw fuel comes from the Haru Oni pilot plant in Chile, which is operated by HIF Global. This raw fuel is readied for use through a process known as blending. The final product enables the 911 GT3 Cup cars to potentially run almost CO₂-neutrally. A second-generation bio-based, semi-synthetic fuel mixture has already been used in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in the previous three years. Together with HIF Global, Porsche’s top one-make cup is set on taking the next step.
Circuit Zandvoort
Opened in 1948, the Circuit Zandvoort became a regular fixture on the Formula 1 World Championship calendar until 1985. Only in 2021 did extensive modifications make it possible for the Dutch Grand Prix to return to the premier class of motor racing. Today’s 4.259-kilometre circuit features two banked corners, an unusual feature for a European track. Crests and dips make some turns difficult to see from the cockpit. Moreover, sand on the track can make the grip conditions unpredictable. The Circuit Zandvoort has hosted the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup since 2021.
Last season, the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup held two races in Zandvoort in one weekend, with the Dutch fans celebrating the home victories of Morris Schuring (Fach Auto Tech) and Loek Hartog (Team GP Elite).
